The feet are very often a neglected part of our bodies, but think about the work that they do, they carry our weight all day. We need to take good care of them, they need to be kept in good condition.

They are covered up all winter and when it comes to summer, we realize the terrible condition that they are in.

Very few people have ever actually had a pedicure or even given themselves one, but below is a step by step guide to getting beautiful looking healthy feet at home.

You will need:

A large bowl

A foot file

A nail file

Moisturiser

Cuticle cream or olive oil

Q tips or cotton buds

Nail polish remover

Cotton wool or an old towel

Nail scissors

Exfoliator

Nail brush

Base coat

Nail polish

Toe separators

Step 1:

Moisten a cotton wool ball or an old towel with acetone free nail polish remover, and stroke it over the toe nails to remove any traces of old nail polish.

Step 2:

Cut your nails with the nail scissors, cut straight across and do not cut downwards, this can lead to ingrowing toenails.

File them straight across with the nails file, you can use a metal file on your toe nails as they are much thicker and stronger than your finger nails. Also, since they are so thick, most standard emery boards would not be able to cope with the task.

Step 3:

Soak your feet in a large bowl of warm water, you can add oils to it such as peppermint or olive oil to help revive and soften the feet. Exfoliate your feet using small gentle circular movements, scrub the toes and nails with the nail brush, rinse.

Step 4: Remove your feet from the water and apply a liberal amount of moisturiser wrap them in the towel and leave for about 10 minutes.

Step 5: File away any rough skin from the feet using the foot file, pay particular attention to the heels.

Apply another coat of moisturiser.

Step 6: Apply warm olive oil or cuticle cream to the cuticles and massage in, gently push the cuticles back with a cotton bud/q tip.

Step 7: Put your toe separators/dividers in; apply your base coat (if using polish)

Allow it to dry and add a coat of colour.

apply nail polish

First and foremost thing, girls have to do before applying nail polish is to wash their hands and nails in lukewarm water. Use nail brush to clean the dirt in your nails.

As you are done with cleaning now remove the nail polish that is already on your nails. You can use either acetone based nail polish removers or non – acetone based ones. The difference between these two removers is that acetone based removers will take off the nail polish very quickly but it will leave your cuticles dry. So when you use this, make sure that it has aloe-Vera in it. Though the non-acetone based removers take long time to remove the nail polish, they don”t dehydrate your cuticles.

First apply a single base coat. Let it dry completely.

Nail Care Tips

Unless you have some type of medical condition that prevents it, your nails are growing. On average, your nails grow about 1/8 of an inch per month. The reason why most people’s nails don’t seem to grow is because they break before they see results. Many people bite their nails, rip them off, others tend to shed or peel. They best way to see results is to start a healthy nail program with your nail technician.

1. Wash and dry your hands properly.

2. Using a double-sided emery board, file nails using a gentle stroke. Avoid corners of your nails.

3. Shape your nails. The most popular shape to use is oval, but choose that suites to your hand and finger shape.

4. To harden soft nails, soak in warm olive oil for about 20 minutes, on alternate days.

5. To clean stains from your nails, mix one tablespoon of lemon juice in a cup of water and soak your nails in this liquid

for a few minutes. Then, wash off with warm water and apply a hand moisturizer.

6. Try to stay away from acetone polish removers as much as you can and stick to the one that make use of acetate. Still, try

not to use a polish remover more than once a week.

7. In case you wear nail polish, make sure to give your nails a break from time to time. In other words leave them without

polish for a few days, every now and then. Otherwise, they will develop an ugly, yellow tint.

8. If you want to give a natural sheen to your nails, just like the colorless base coat, rub petroleum jelly on your nails

and then buff them, with the help of a soft cloth.

9. Don’t soak your fingers in water for longer periods, they’ll ultimately weaken them causing breakage.

10. Do not overuse Nail polish removers, they contain acetone which when comes in contact with skin and cuticles eventually

dry them up.

11. Never push your cuticles back too far. Just cut how mush has peeled off from your nail. And always keep them moisturized.

12. Hangnails are common. Don’t pull or tear them so as to give rise to infections. Cut them gently with a nail trimmer.

How do I know if I am wearing MMA Acrylic Nails?
How can I avoid MMA?
Are there alternatives to wearing Acrylics?

Definition of MMA

MMA stands for Methyl Methacrylate; a colorless liquid with a sharp, fruity odor. It is typically used to make resins, plastics, and specifically plastic dentures. In the nail industry this dangerous chemical can be found in acrylic liquids/monomers. When MMA acrylic liquid is used the nails are typically referred to as “dental acrylics” or “porcelain nails”. The FDA has prohibited this checmical from being used on fingernails, however some states still have not “banned” this chemical from use in nail salons. Continue reading »

Always use a basecoat or clear polish before applying a new nail color.
NEVER go without polish…The basecoat/clear helps to keep the seals down and keeps  them from drying out.
Use your oil EVERYDAY – several times a day.  This keeps moisture on the seals, keeps them from breaking, and in penetrated thru the acrylic right to the nail bed so that eactime you use it, your nails get stronger and healthier.  It also helps the acrylic to cure harder. Continue reading »

Here are some tips to toughen or protect weak fingernails:

1. How do I avoid getting polish on my cuticles?
Instead of painting right from the cuticle, place the brush on the nail bed about 1/8″ away from the cuticle and push backwards toward it, stopping just before the skin.
2. That’s too much work…how do remove polish from my cuticles?
Plan ahead. Paint your nails about an hour before bedtime, leaving the messy polish on. When taking a shower the next morning, the polish will soften and peel off. Any stubborn polish still left on the skin can easily be removed by rubbing it with a soft towel. Polish not dry yet? In a rush? Use a cotton swab and nail polish remover to do a quick removal. I try to buy nail polish removers that are gentle, but I have to use a lot of it to remove polish. What’s the difference?

Acetone is by far the best solvent for fingernail polish. Just dab it on the cotton and it will wipe the polish off right away. But it’s drying to the cuticles. Companies then introduced acetone-free removers, which are better for your skin, Continue reading »
