Fingernails and toenails are the common bed of fungal infections. Though it is common, it is not really as easy to to cure. Everywhere we go, fungi are present, 133799_f120and they can give different effects on our body. When infected, the nails will look thick and dull. Eventually, it will become crumbly and will result to the loss of your nails.

Not only does it not look very pleasing, it has a bad odor due to the fungus or death of the nail. Plus, it is very unhealthy and unhygienic. Because of the strong resistance of our barriers against fungus entering the nails, once they get inside, they are as difficult to eliminate. There are treatments which can be either Topical, surgical, or by medications, to fight the fungal infection. However, they may be too costly except Zetaclear which comes very cheap and is very effective in eliminating nail fungus infections- and they have to be continuous for a long time, or else nothing will happen even with the efforts.

Even if it may seem to clear up from time to time, they may return when the medication is not progressed. If you are unsure of the signs of having a nail fungus, you may want to see if the nails are becoming yellowish, and sometimes brownish. They also become thick and brittle which results to an easy breakage of the nails. Also check if the tips of the nails seem to be crumbling. To prevent nail fungus, you Continue reading »

Never use your nails as tools.

Never “pick” your cuticles. This can lead to infection, then damage or even loss of the nail.

Keep cuticles soft and supple. The skin splitting around the cuticle area and the side wall is a sign of dryness, prevent dryness with cuticle oil.

Keep your cuticles pushed back. For the same reasons as in 3. The tighter the skin around the nail is, the more chance it will dry and split.

Make sure you clean out from under your nails everyday. Debris and bacteria harbor themselves in this area and can cause infections.

Keep your cuticles pushed back. Continue reading »

Like your hair, nails are comprised of dead cells that make up a protein called keratin. The hardness of the nail comes from the presence of sulfur in the amino acids binding the keratin of the nails together. Between the layers of keratin are fat and water molecules that make nails shiny and pliable.

Glossary of Nail Terms
The nail bed is the pink part of your nail containing the capillaries that bring nourishment to the matrix, which is the area just beneath the cuticle. The matrix is where new cells are generated, making nails grow. The actual nail is called the nail plate, and the crescent moon at its base is called the lunula. The cuticle is the ribbon of skin at the base of the nail covering the matrix. This flexible strip seals off the finger to the nail, keeping out substances, like bacteria, that can damage the matrix. Your cuticle is there for a reason; it’s the skin barrier that prevents bacteria from entering your body. Cuticles should not be cut off! On the other hand, you can’t let them grow haywire either, because overgrown cuticles can suffocate nail growth. The solution: Apply a cuticle remover (not a cuticle cream or oil) to the nail. Then, using tiny circular movements, take an orangewood stick and gently push back anywhere the cuticle skin touches the nail plate. Hold the stick at an angle to ensure that you do this gradually and gently, without going above the cuticle. The white stuff left over by the cuticle, the ghost of the cuticle, is called pterygium, and this should be cleaned from the nail as well. Continue reading »

The number one reason for hangnails is that your cuticles are too dry. When you see ragged cuticles or hangnails, it’s your body’s way of telling you to apply hand cream or lotion. No one moisturizes their cuticles enough. I tell people to put a bunch of moisturizers with pumps around the house, and whenever you come across one, use it. Continue reading »
