Nail Anatomy

Healthy nails are smooth, shiny, and translucent pink colored. They also have a normal growth pattern. Unhealthy nails can have disorders and result in Nail Anatomyabnormal growth.
The technical term for nail is “onyx”. Nails are considered part of the skin; they are made up of keratin, like the skin and hair. But nails are a harder form of keratin than skin and hair. They help to protect and grasp.
The average rate of growth for adult nails is 1/8” per month. Toenails grow even slower. Nails can replace themselves within 3-4 months. They do grow quicker in the summer than the winter. The nail on the middle finger grows the fastest, and the nail on the thumb the slowest.

Parts of the Fingernail:

  1. Nail Plate: Main part of the nail that is attached to the skin at the top layer of the finger. Although it looks like one piece, it is actually formed in layers.
  2. Nail Root: This is where the nail growth begins. It is embedded under the skin at the base of the nail. Continue reading »

Anatomically fingernails and toenails, which are made of a tough protein called keratin and are produced from living skin cells in the fingers and toes, are made up of many different parts:

  • • The free edge is the part of the nail that extends past the finger, beyond the nail plate. There are no nerve endings in the nail – this is the growing part of the nail still under the skin at the nail’s proximal end.
  • • eponychium or cuticle, is the fold of skin at the proximal end of the nail.
  • • paronychium is the fold of skin on the sides of the nail.
  • • hyponychium is the attachment between the skin of the finger or toe and the distal end of the nail.
  • • nail plate is the hard and translucent portion, composed of keratin.
  • • nail bed is the adherent connective tissue that underlies the nail, often colloquially referred to as the “quick.”
  • • lunula is the crescent shaped whitish area of the nail bed (when visible)
  • • nail fold a fold of hard skin overlapping the base and sides of a fingernail or toenail.

In common usage the word nail usually refers to the nail plate only. Nails grow at an average rate of 3 millimeters a month Fingernails require 3 to 6 months to regrow completely.

Toenails require 12 to 18 months. Actual growth rate is dependent upon age, gender, season, exercise level, and hereditary factors. Contrary to popular belief, nails do not continue to grow after death; the skin dehydrates and tightens, making the nails (and hair) appear to grow. This growth record can show the history of recent health and physiological imbalances, and has been used as a diagnostic tool since ancient times.Major illness will cause a deep groove to form across the nails. Discoloration, thinning, thickening, brittleness, splitting, grooves, Mees’ lines, small white spots, receded lunula, clubbing (convex), flatness, spooning (concave) can indicate illness in other areas of the body, nutrient deficiencies, drug reaction or poisoning, or merely local injury. Nails can also become thickened (onychogryphosis), loosened (onycholysis), infected with fungus (onychomycosis) or degenerative (onychodystrophy); for further information see nail diseases.

Nail Care Explicit s

The nail care business is roaring with Manicures, pedicures, imitation tips, paraffin fixes, nail jewelry – and nail salons looking on every joint.

There was a time when exclusively the upper class had regular manicures, but presently it’s very common. Whether you go to a salon every week, or decide to buff and polish the nails at home, it’s critical to promptly attend to your nails.

Take a peep at your hands. What do they suggest about you? Consider about what they suggest to others. Are your hands harsh, red, irritated? Or, are they smooth and charming?

Are your cuticles chopped? Or have you removed or pushed them back? Hot pink or French tips, it’s not the color you wear that matters. What surely matters is the status of your hands and nails, and you are able to improve the class of your nails by taking a few simple steps.

Cover-up your nails

Use gloves when washing the dishes or the kitchen. Please do not employ your nails as tools. They aren’t meant to scrape the price stickers off your newly bought picture frame! Be sure to apply sunscreen everywhere down to the bends of your nails. Sun upsets nails, too.

Moisturize the nails periodically.

Any time you wash your hands, you are required to moisturize your hands. Keep hand cream in your tote. Keep a bottle in each bathroom of your home and also one nearby the kitchen sink.

Nails are required to breath

Anytime, ditch the polish out of your manicure routine. Let your nails get a bit of oxygen.
Do not apply nail products having formaldehyde. Don’t employ it on your nails, it’s not safe.
Gelatin surely does perform. You thought it was a misapprehension when you were taught it as a teenager, but it’s correct. Eating gelatin helps your nails raise blooming and healthful.

Diet

Fresh fruits, water, protein from meats and fish, vegetables, and vitamins (multi and E, in particular) all activate nail growth.

Sterilize!

maintain your home manicure set clean. At the salon, procure a set from the nail technician. The salon will employ it only for you. They’re cheap and critical to fend yourself from fungus and communicable infections.

In no way remain shy, be sure your manicurist acknowledges that you take cleanliness sincerely.

Nail Care – Great Looking Nails!

Nail Care: Keeping your nails looking young, healthy and shapely

The shape of your nails can have an affect on your self-esteem, believe it or not. In fact, when you look at your nails you can tell whether or not they are healthy.

How to tell if your nails are healthy:

One way to know if your nails are healthy is whether or not they break easily or not.

Furthermore, the healthiest nails do not have any ridges, lines, or white spots on them (however harmless this slight blemish would be).

More importantly, healthy nails do not appear to have any type of yellow or green discoloration in any way. If your nails appear this way it could be a sign that something else is not right with your body, or a symptom of another condition such as chronic bronchitis or lymphedema (swelling of the hands).

The effect of a poor diet on the nails:

The effect of a poor diet on the nails:

Unhealthy nails could also be a sign that the body is deficient in certain nutrients such as Vitamin E or Calcium. It is very important for you to watch your diet in order to ensure that you have the best-looking nails as possible.

Eating a variety of vegetables and/or dairy that contain calcium in them will help, along with eating certain types of fish. The body also needs plenty of fruits and vegetables daily.

Proper nail care:

Besides dieting correctly, a person needs to use the proper nail care tools for shaping and caring for the nails. If you want healthier-looking nails you will want to invest in a few different products that will help you.

For example a buffer that has three or four different sides would be very helpful. The function of this particular tool is to file, buff, and shine your nails. When you are done using this nail tool your nails will typically look as though you have applied a clear coat of nail sealant to them.

While using a nail file and/or buffer you will usually use each side of the nail buffer on the top and the tips of your nails. While applying each step to the tip of your nails you will want to make sure to stroke the buffer across the tip of your nail in one direction always-not back and forth.

Furthermore, while applying each step of the nail buffer to the top of your nail it is best to work from the inside of your nail to the outside. You are advised that if you want healthy nails not to bite them. You also should not bit your cuticles because this could cause infection. You can do research to find out healthy ways to treat your nail cuticles. There are hand held tools and creams that can help your properly remove them.

UV-Gel-Nails

The nails help protect the end of fingers and toes from trauma as well as to help pick up small objects. Over the last century, nails have become more focused on cosmetic reasons and less focused on protection. Manicuring is the care of hands and nails. Basic manicuring should be done at least once a week.

These are the steps to take for a simple do-it-yourself (regular) home manicure:
1. Remove the old nail polish
2. Shape the nails:

Really, there is no specific shade(s) that is “in” right now. It’s mostly a seasonal taste preference. In the winter companies have you craving for metalic colours, and dark, frosty browns. In the spring it’s pastels, In the summer it’s frosty light colours and in the fall it’s mattes and browns. But it’s mostly personal preference and your personality. Colours say more about your personality than you know. To you it’s just “oh, that’s a great colour,” but in fact, leading color experts claim that those “great colours” you savor reveal pieces of the inner you that you may not even be aware of.

Red is the vigorous colour of health and long life Continue reading »

Never use your nails as tools.

Never “pick” your cuticles. This can lead to infection, then damage or even loss of the nail.

Keep cuticles soft and supple. The skin splitting around the cuticle area and the side wall is a sign of dryness, prevent dryness with cuticle oil.

Keep your cuticles pushed back. For the same reasons as in 3. The tighter the skin around the nail is, the more chance it will dry and split.

Make sure you clean out from under your nails everyday. Debris and bacteria harbor themselves in this area and can cause infections.

Keep your cuticles pushed back. Continue reading »

Some nail techs are intimidated by nail art and are not comfortable using acrylic paints. Here we show you how to use only polish to create playful nail art.

Polish nails with a slanted French manicure. Using a liner brush and two shades of polish, create a daisy.

Using the same color of polish and a toothpick, create a flower on the French tip.

Create a white dot flower just below the white free edge. Add silver glitter on each of the dot flowers. Continue reading »

Gels are pre-mixed, so no ratio errors; never too wet (excess shrinkage) or too dry (brittleness). (Gels can’t be too wet or too dry, due to the “oligomer” gel, instead of monomer-liquid and polymer-powder mix as with acrylics.)

Gels harden in 20 secs and cure in under 2 mins (generally), so no lifting problems associated with filing on un-cured liquid/powder (polymer/monomer which take upwards of 24-72 hours to cure) acrylics. (Of course due to the photo-initiator induced hardening/curing of gels instead of body heat-induced as with acrylics).

To begin with… Lets understand how the plate is held onto the bed in the first place.
There is a thin layer of skin attached to the bottom side of the nail plate. This lil layer of skin is an epidermal layer. It is called the bed epithelium. This skin has little rails. This skin grows out with the nail plate, sloughing off after the plate becomes the distal or free edge. At this point of growth.. This skin is referred to as the Solehorn.

Dermal (deep) layer of skin does not grow out with the plate. It stays in a fixed position. This dermal tissue has little micro grooves in it that allows the epidermal layer to grow out. It kind of like a rail in groove set-up that holds the plate to the bed. It is a VERY strong set-up, but sometimes the lil rails can pop out of the grooves, giving us……(insert drum roll)….Onycholysis.
This nail disorder is seen by the free edge looking abnormal, or rather, that it looks as if the white part of the plate moves a lil toward the matrix area. Continue reading »

Artificial Nails are wonderful but are not for everyone.  Due to lifestyles and occupations many people are better off trying to grow their natural nails.  If you are looking into having artificial nails applied or are currently wearing them….here are some tips and precautions, in general, and some occupational hazards in particular.

Read all of the information below or click on the underlined subject of interest and it will take you to the place in the text that applies to the subject you choose.  This information comes from real clients in real world salon and life situations.  If you fall into one of these categories and the information does not apply to you…You are one of the lucky few.

Nurses and Health Care Professionals – This occupation requires a lot of hand and finger use.  Administering shots, rolling a patient on their side or changing bed linens, not to mention wearing gloves that cause your hands to sweat.  The risk of jamming your nail is high so nails should be kept short.  Also some hospitals will not allow you to wear polish (I have no idea why, and neither do the hospitals), so you will want a natural look.  Wearing gloves is another problem.  Make sure you are going to a nail technician that applies nails that do not lift (in a 2-3 week period).   Also applying a good quality top coat every other day or so will help your nails stay sealed against moisture and lifting.  Over the years some of my best clients were nurses and one or two doctors.

Chipping polish has been a problem since the beginning of polish wear.

Nails are flexible and  when they bend, the inflexible paint on then cracks and peels away.

It is very similar to the paint on a house… As the house is exposed to the elements and the wood or shingles expand and contract with the moisture in the air…. The paint on the house cracks and peels.

Hands and nails are in water several times a day.  Your natural nail is porous and becomes swollen and soft when allowed to remain in contact with water.  This allows the polish to “let go” of the nail.  That is why housewives and swimmers have the toughest time with polish wear-ability.

Here are some tips to increase your polish wear-ability. Continue reading »

A few light strokes of acrylic may help cure men of their nail-biting habit.

Most brides don’t want three inch nail enhancements and blood red polish for their walk down the aisle.

“Most women want beautiful, natural looking nails for their wedding day,” says Mary Orlando, owner of Featuring You spa and salon in Toronto, Ontario. “There will always be some who request their favorite bright red or pink polish, but most like to keep nails clean and fresh looking.”

According to Orlando, soft, sheer colors in neutral pink or peach tones, in addition to the classic French manicure, are the most popular and flattering for brides. As for length, nails are normally kept short, extending just past the free edge, and are filed into a neat “squoval” shape‹squared on the sides, then slightly rounded on top. Continue reading »

Q.  How long should my nails be?
A. The can vary person to person. Your lifestyle plays a part in determining the length, such as sports or career. A good rule of thumb is never let the free edge (white tip) get any longer than 1/2 the length of the nail bed (the pink part).
Q. Are there instructions for filing your nails?
A. Yes, there are specific ways to file your nails in order to achieve best results. Here are some helpful ways to file your nails; Continue reading »

Using Solar Oil helps maintain Nail enhancements

Solar oils are a blend of four light essential oils designed to penetrate and moisturize skin, all while plasticising nails.

Plasticising is maintaining a balance of flexibility and strength.

Jojoba – the finest grade.  Its main function is to act as a carrier oil.  To penetrate deep into the nail and carry with it:  vitamin E – anti-aging;  Rice bran oil – oriental softening and scent, and Sweet almond oil – softening and scent.

It is best to file your nails only when the white part of the nail-the tip-has grown ¼ inch from the nail’s stress point, which is where the free edge meets the pink part of the nail plate. If you file your nails before this point, it can weaken them. At the same time, if you let your free edge grow longer than the nail plate, it is certain your nail will break. Do not file from side to side, which can weaken the stress points of the nail’s free edge. Be sure to go from corner to center in one direction, using the groove on the side of your nail as a guide.
