Habits of a Successful Nail Technail technicians

Not all nail technicians are created equal. While nail technicians both successful and not so successful all have one goal in mind…. to make a career out of what they love doing… Some nail techs just know exactly what it takes to bring in clients and keep them coming year after year… and others are not sure.

However, all hope is not lost for nail techs struggling to make their passion a career. Simply following the footsteps of a successful nail tech will put a struggling nail technician on the road to success.

There is no magic formula to making money as a nail tech. It’s not even about how great your nail art designs are or how great your pedicures are. It’s all in how you market yourself and your services!

A successful Nail Technician will always have a balance of Sales and Marketing and Nail Application. These 2 together will put any nail tech ahead of the competition. A nail tech that knows how to market her/his business will out grow and crush the nail tech that is only good at nail designs, acrylic application ..etc.! Continue reading »

It is risky to breathe too much of anything except air. But nail technicians
use relatively small amounts of acetone. It would be uncomfortable to
stay in a room that had an unsafe amount of acetone in the air. The eyes
would burn, and it would become difficult to breathe easily. At these high
concentrations, acetone has excellent warning properties. In other words,
you will know that you need better ventilation long before there’s too
much acetone in the air. It is practically impossible to breathe too much
acetone in the salon. Continue reading »

The disinfection technique that we’re taught in beauty schools is usually complete and detailed. You know, we take our implements to the dispensary, turn on the warm water, then soap and brush our implements. Next, we rinse them, dry them and place them in the disinfection tray…yadayadayada. The problem: Successful nail technicians don’t have time to use a dispensary method for disinfection. Who has the time to go to the dispensary? So, many of us cheat on the technique. Worse, some don’t do it at all. So, what happens? Maybe “greenies” begin to appear on our clients. Or a few clients, concerned about our cleanliness and professionalism, begin to look around for another technician. Cleanliness is important to contemporary clientele. Whatever is happening, we need to find a way to clean up our act without constantly trekking to the dispensary. Continue reading »

Understanding what primer is
and how it’s properly applied
will lead to less lifting and
healthier nails.

Nail primer can certainly make life easier for the nail technician. If used correctly, it can virtually eliminate lifting. But primer can also create problems if used unwisely. As with all of your professional tools, understanding and proper use are the keys to success.

Why do nail technicians need nail primer? The answer is simple: to improve adhesion and prevent lifting. Most liquid and powder enhancement products don’t adhere strongly to the natural nail when used without a primer. This is actually an advantage because enhancements that bond too strongly to the nail plate are difficult to remove safely. The old fashioned “dental acrylics” are a great example. These products bonded so tightly to the nail plate that only aggressive drilling and coarse abrasives could remove them. Continue reading »

Nail Colors are formulated to be applied to finger & toes nails with an airbrush. For this reason, many nail technicians assume that any “airbrush paint” can be used, expecting the same performance and vibrancy – then wonder why they do not achieve the desired results. Let me give you an analogy. There are many bleaches formulated to be used in your laundry, correct? But if you wanted to bleach your hair, you would never use a laundry bleach! That would be absurd, wouldn’t it?!

Many nail technicians use textile or ceramic hobby paints as color on the finger and toe nails. Many of those technicians are not even aware of this fact. Hobby & craft companies now sell in the nail industry, hoping to profit from the new “airbrushing market”, yet not completely understanding the salon environment and the customers’ needs. After all, this color is being applied to the human body in a salon, not on a canvas or t-shirt, so it must be chemically different.

Any color that a nail technician applies to your nails should wash off easily with just water. If the technician is using an alcohol or ammonia based product to clean overspray from your skin, it may be causing damage and/or dehydration. Continue reading »

If the future holds a lot of promise, the 21st century sure has plenty to deliver on. With its cyberspace advancements and ground-breaking technology, the new millennium promises us a bright and beautiful future. But don’t think style and design sensibilities will be residing in the past. Futuristic fabrics and space age influences have been cropping up the last few seasons and will continue to do so.

Beauty has unmistakably reflected our transition to a new millennium. From color to texture, the expression of our personal style will be influenced by emerging trends. Consider nail design. Gone are the days of baby pink tips and conservative colors. Sleek cyber shades, texture, and unexpected designs have increasingly turned up on our nails.

Flashy is becoming more mainstream. Fashion powerhouse Gucci debuted ads this season showcasing a hand with long black nails, silver hoops pierced through the pinky. Black, glittery nails were also shown on the runways of Marc Jacobs and Alexander McQueen. Continue reading »

Apply Nail PoliceOne of the beauties of a professional manicure is that nail technicians know how to flawlessly apply nail polish in a way that it usually stays looking great for about a week, without chipping or peeling. But what if you can’t afford regular manicures or don’t have time to go to the salon? There are a few steps you can take to ensure that a do-it-yourself manicure lasts longer.

1.Slide the nail buffer gently back and forth several times across each nail to even out any ridges.

2.Apply a clear base coat to each nail. Touch the tip of the applicator brush to the bottom middle of the nail (near the cuticle) and drag it to the top. The result will be a strip of color covering approximately 1/3 of the nail. Continue reading »
